A screw is a simple machine. It has a corkscrew-shaped ridge, known as a thread, wrapped around a cylinder.

The most common uses of screws are to hold objects together —such as wood/drywall —and to position objects.
Screws give you tremendous holding power and can hold as much as 100 lbs. if driven into a drywall stud. Nails, on the other hand, max out at around 40 lbs.

With Wood it always starts with drilling pilot holes. An unthreaded hole is known as a clear hole.

When you drive screws into wood without drilling pilot holes, you’re essentially pushing wood out of the way to make room for the screw. Not a Good move!

Drilling a pilot makes the job easier to drive in a screw. Pilot holes guarantee that your screw won’t break off and your wood won’t crack.

When repairing a stripped hole in wood, only a larger Screw will work.

Drywall is all about the anchor. If a screw is not anchored well, screws may become loose.

If a screw is inserted into a substance that cannot provide sufficient friction, it will become loose.

Screws may also become loose due to vibration or insufficient friction in the mating surface.
